MoU with Metso on Collaboration in the Field of Lithium Refining

– Contributing to expanded lithium production through sustainable refining technologies –

JGC Holdings Corporation is pleased to announce that overseas EPC operating company JGC Corporation has signed a nonexclusive memorandum of understanding on October 29 of this year with Metso, which possesses a proprietary alkaline leaching method for use in lithium refining, to explore potential collaboration using this method.

Lithium is a critical mineral for which global demand is expected to increase for rechargeable batteries and other applications, but lithium and lithium refining technologies are found only in limited areas of the world, making it difficult to secure a stable supply. Moreover, the conventional lithium refining process, sulfuric acid roasting, requires highly corrosive sulfuric acid, neutralization processes, and complex impurity removal processes. The process has long been recognized as posing serious environmental risks from its by-products and residues.

To address these issues, Metso has developed alkaline leaching methods to leach lithium from concentrates and other materials. This refining method is exceptionally environmentally conscious and sustainable. Because it does not involve sulfuric acid, it reduces chemical consumption such as neutralizers and generation of residues. Residue generated as a by-product is chemically stable and can be reused as a construction material. The simpler equipment used also makes this approach more economical from the standpoint of lower initial equipment and operating costs. As rechargeable batteries and similar products become more widespread around the world, this method of lithium refining holds promise in meeting growing lithium demand and supporting the energy transition.

Besides applying extensive experience and expertise in EPC, JGC Corporation boasts an unmatched record in the field of nonferrous smelting, where we have completed several hydrometallurgical plants that use sophisticated technologies such as high-pressure acid leaching (HPAL).* Conclusion of this MoU stems from our expectation of further market growth and our belief that synergies with Metso will enhance JGC Group competitive advantages.

Under the MoU, both companies will explore new business opportunities that leverage Metso's proprietary alkaline leaching method and JGC Group EPC expertise to serve potential customers, drawing on the JGC client base. Metso will provide technical support, conduct pilot tests, and study licensing, while JGC Corp. will work with domestic EPC operating company JGC Japan Corp. to conduct sales activities focused on our existing key business regions of Japan, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East, besides conducting feasibility studies and front-end engineering and design. Future collaboration with Metso in providing EPC and O&M services will also be considered.
