In 1989, JGC landed a contract from Shell MDS (Malaysia) to construct the world's first commercial plant to produce middle distillates from natural gas.

Huge reserves of natural gas have been confirmed throughout the world, but many of them are located far from consumption areas, requiring it to be transported via long-distance pipelines or requiring the building of liquefaction, storage and transportation facilities.

To overcome these issues associated with the use of natural gas, this project involved the construction of equipment to convert natural gas into liquid petroleum products, developed over many years by Shell, allowing the products to be sold on the market like general petroleum products.

In addition to the fact that this project required quick delivery, it was a technically difficult project due to the complexity of the processes involved and the need for special equipment, but the entire company became actively involved in the project to oversee its execution and completed the project with zero accident, winning high critical acclaim from Shell.
