In 1993, JGC landed a contract to construct an ethylene plant from one of the three biggest state owned oil companies in China, China Petrochemical International Co., which was completed in 1996.
This project involved the construction of the biggest of the 12 ethylene plants that were slated for construction in accordance with the 8th Five-Year Plan (1990 - 1994) of the National Economic and Social Development Plan of China. Its ethylene output was 300,000 tons/year.
