Nuclear Fuel Reprocessing Facility
Client | Japan Atomic Energy Agency |

Location | Ibaraki/Japan |
Completion | 1974 |
Scope | EPC |

JGC landed the contract for this project jointly with Saint-Gobain of France from the Power Reactor and Nuclear Fuel Development Corporation (currently the Japan Atomic Energy Agency) in 1970, and construction was completed in 1974.
The purpose of this facility is to recover plutonium and depleted uranium from spent nuclear fuel, and remove the radioactive waste of fission products. The facility consists of the main factory and a factory for treating waste. Useful substances are extracted and refined at the main factory, while low-level radioactive waste is treated at the waste treatment factory.
JGC faced numerous difficulties in constructing what at the time was the first nuclear fuel reprocessing facility in Japan, but the project was successfully completed through the making of steady progress in overcoming the issues.
