The goal of this project was to pipe gas, extracted from the Southwest Ampa oil and gas field 20 km off the coast of Brunei, to the Lumut area of the same country to produce LNG, which was then exported to Japan and other countries. JGC formed a joint venture with Procon of the U.S. and landed a contract calling for engineering, procurement and construction of an LNG plant for Brunei LNG, a company owned by Mitsubishi Corporation, Shell, and the Brunei government. In the joint venture, JGC was left in charge of engineering and procurement, while the partner company, Procon, oversaw the management of construction, and LNG trains 1 to 4 were completed in 1973, and a 5th train in 1975, respectively.
This was JGC's first LNG project, and the use of ultra-low temperature processing at -162 degrees Celsius was an area that the company had no experience in, but JGC was able to deal with the technology to design low-temperature processes in this project by making full use of the extensive experience in constructing large ethylene plants.
JGC successfully completed this project, and the first shipment of LNG out of this plant arrived on schedule in Japan, for which the company managed to win appraisal in the field of LNG plant construction. This has led to the landing of numerous contracts and an extensive track record to date in LNG projects.
