Green Ammonia Production Begins in Namie, Fukushima
JGC Holdings Corporation has announced the start of ammonia production at a plant in Namie, Fukushima, built to demonstrate production technology for green ammonia obtained through a process that applies renewable energy. Participants have decided that the green ammonia produced will be supplied through an off-taker to thermal power stations.

The plant is being used in a large-scale alkaline water electrolysis system development and green chemical plant demonstration project*1 conducted with Asahi Kasei Corporation that was selected for New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) green innovation funding*2 in August 2021. We have been involved in developing an integrated control system for optimized plant operations in production of "green" chemicals such as green ammonia, which uses hydrogen produced with renewable energy sources as feedstock, as the demonstrations continue.
Green ammonia production began in early January this year at the Namie Green Ammonia Integrated Control System Demonstration Field (NAMICS), a pilot plant built between October 2023*3 and November 2025.
The plant is demonstrating green ammonia production technology with hydrogen from the nearby Fukushima Hydrogen Energy Research Field (FH2R)*4 which is obtained by applying renewable energy. With operations at the plant set to continue until fiscal 2026, JGC Holdings will establish green ammonia production technology as the integrated control system is verified and further improved. Insight gained from the pilot plant will also be applied in another large pilot plant for green chemical production planned by Asahi Kasei for fiscal 2027 and beyond.
Green ammonia produced at the plant will be supplied to local thermal power stations for use in flue-gas denitration through Resonac Corporation.
Through this project, JGC Holdings aims to establish efficient, stable green ammonia production technology and support low-carbon ammonia production.
