JGC accelerates large-scale ammonia cracking technology development with Amogy's catalyst
Yokohama, Japan - JGC Holdings Corporation (JGC) is pleased to announce that JGC concluded the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Amogy*1 , a U.S.A-based startup, to utilize Amogy's catalyst for large-scale ammonia cracking technology development. This MoU is expected to accelerate large-scale ammonia cracking technology development and reduce hydrogen production cost.
JGC is developing the technology, in which hydrogen will be obtained from the thermal decomposition of ammonia for 100,000 TPA of large-scale hydrogen production with Kubota and Taiyo Nippon Sanso under NEDO's (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization) "Development of Technologies for Building a Competitive Hydrogen Supply Chain" project* from 2023. For this project, JGC's main role is to design and develop the entire process and the cracking furnace.

To improve the overall system, an ammonia cracking catalyst is one of the key elements. Amogy's low ruthenium content catalyst provides highly efficient ammonia conversion into hydrogen at a low temperature, and JGC expects to achieve higher efficiency and lower capex to realize lower hydrogen production cost with Amogy's catalyst.
One of the starting points of the relationship between JGC and Amogy is "AP Ventures Fund III", the venture capital fund in United Kingdom which JGC invested in 2024 for the purpose of strengthening technical proposal capability in hydrogen, ammonia and CCUS field.
JGC plans to conduct FEED (Front End Engineering Design) for the demonstration plant within FY 2025 and will utilize Amogy's low ruthenium content catalyst, aiming to realize hydrogen production technology at low CAPEX.
JGC will strengthen relationships with companies which have innovative technologies and solutions for collaboration to accelerate technology development of large-scale hydrogen production for a carbon neutral society.
"Large-scale ammonia cracking technology is one of the last elements to be developed and commercialized to realize clean hydrogen-ammonia supply chain globally at industrial scale." said Masahiro Aika, Executive Vice President and Technology Commercialization Officer of JGC. "We are excited to collaborate with Amogy to improve JGC's ammonia cracking process by utilizing Amogy's low ruthenium content catalysts."
"This first pilot plant deployment of our ammonia cracking catalyst represents a major achievement for Amogy and a breakthrough for the hydrogen industry," said Seonghoon Woo, CEO and co-founder of Amogy. "We are proud to contribute to this pioneering project and play a crucial role in the advancement of large-scale hydrogen production using ammonia as a carrier. Our catalyst technology will help improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of ammonia cracking, a key component in building a competitive hydrogen supply chain."
