In 1999, JGC formed a joint venture with ABB Lummus Global (at the time) of the Netherlands, a major engineering company, and landed a contract for a project to construct a petrochemical plant for SERAYA CHEMICALS SINGAPORE.

The petrochemical products produced at the new facility included around 560,000 tons of styrene monomer per year, around 250,000 tons of propylene oxide per year, and around 640,000 tons of ethylbenzene per year, making it one of the biggest plants in the world.

JGC achieved a record of zero accidents during the entire 15 million hours of construction, and completed the project in 2002, for which the company won the high appraisal of the client.
