The goal of this project was to construct a facility to treat radioactive waste from the North Anna and Surry Nuclear Power Plants in Virginia operated by Dominion Virginia Power of the U.S. JGC acquired the contract in 1987, and completed construction in 1991.

In executing this project, which was the company's first on the U.S. mainland, a variety of initiatives were implemented to procure materials and recruit local construction workers in the U.S. It paved the way to the acquiring of contracts and execution of future projects by JGC in the U.S.
