In 2003, JGC was awarded by the Sohar Refinery Company (SRC), owned by the state of Oman, a contract valued at approximately 100 billion yen for the construction of a large-scale oil refinery, to be named the Sohar Refinery. Construction was completed in 2006.

The refinery supplies gasoline, as its principal purpose, to the Oman domestic market. It has a processing capacity of 116,000 barrels per day, and includes Crude Distillation Unit (CDU), Residue Fluid Catalytic Cracking (RFCC), Sulfur Recovery Unit (SRU) and other offsite facilities. In addition to gasoline, it produces propylene, LPG, naphtha, kerosene, and fuel oil.

JGC was selected for this project on the strength of having performed the FEED (front-end engineering and design) work for the plant in 2000, as well as its high level of engineering technology and project management capabilities drawing on a wealth of experience with oil refineries. JGC assisted with the finance of the project and took charge of the construction portion.

Project completion not only enabled the government of Oman to export its petroleum resources, but also allowed production of high value-added products, enhancing the versatility of Oman's petroleum-related industries.
